WHAT IS THE "YES, AND..." METHOD
The “Yes, And…” Method is a collaborative approach rooted in improvisational theater. It encourages participants to accept ideas (“Yes”) and build on them (“And”), fostering an environment where creativity and innovation can flourish. For example, in an improv scene:
- Performer A says, “Look, there's a spider on your shoulder.”
- Performer B responds, “Yes, that’s my friend, Timmy. He’s a trouble-maker!”
-
HOW THIS MIGHT PERTAIN TO YOU:
TEAM DYNAMICS:
If one team member says, “Let’s try a new approach for our client presentation,” another might respond, “Yes, and we could also include a live demo to make it more engaging.” Instead of rejecting the idea, the second team member accepts the premise and adds to it, moving the project forward.
By practicing this method, teams learn to listen actively, value every contribution, and expand on possibilities rather than shutting them down. The result is a more open, adaptive, and expansive approach to working that fosters collaboration, problem-solving, and innovation.
PERSONAL INQUIRY:
Yes, you are confident, aggressive, and like to run the show, AND you are also kind, collaborative, and regularly recognize everyone on the team. Recognize both. Not either/or. AND,
YES, you are humble, don’t like the spotlight, and prefer not to have everyone focus on you, AND you will present a positive role model and make decisive decisions aligned with impactful leadership.
YOU AS A FULL HUMAN BEING:
Yes, you are excellent right now, AND where would you like to grow and shine even brighter?
