If receiving recognition makes you uncomfortable, you aren’t alone. Around 70% of people in a survey associated feelings of embarrassment and discomfort with praise. Why do we feel this way?

Offering a compliment has been shown to benefit both the giver and receiver, but we often hold back because we’re worried about how we’ll come off,. Will I make the other person feel awkward? Will the compliment seem fake or pandering?

Bosses have forgotten how to say "good job" — and it's driving employees to quit.

​How are you at giving it? How are you at receiving it?

Do any of these responses to praise or acknowlegement feel familiar to you?

A) You make a joke: “Ha ha, sometimes I get the job done.” 
B) You play compliment ping-pong: “No, no, this was all you! It wouldn’t have been possible without your guidance!”
C) You quickly change the subject: *awkward smile* “So … um, did you see the game last night?”
D) You write it off: “It was nothing, just doing my job.”
E) You pass the credit: “It was really a team effort.”
F) You convince them you’re not that great: “I really don’t think I did a good job, here’s why…”

A FEW TIPS TO GET BETTER AT RECEIVING POSITIVE FEEDBACK

  • Count to three before you respond. ... 
  • Accept the recognition or compliment with a "Thank You.”  That's all you need to do! It may be difficult at first, but you can do it!
  • Connect with the feeling of success. ... 
  • Give yourself more praise, more often. ... 
  • Practice gratitude on a daily basis. ...  ​
